Capybara for sale

Capybara for sale. The capybara, also known as the water pig, is the largest rodent in the world. Weighing up to 75 kg and reaching lengths of over 100 cm, it belongs to the guinea pig family . This might seem surprising at first glance, but upon closer inspection, a clear resemblance to its lively little relatives becomes apparent.

The capybara is native to the tropical swamps and grasslands of South America. True to its name, it lives near lakes, rivers, or other water sources, as it belongs to the so-called semi-aquatic species: similar to beavers, otters, or hippos, capybaras live both on land and in water. Especially in dangerous situations, water is the capybara’s preferred element, as it allows it to move very quickly and dive underwater to escape predators, for example.

What does a capybara look like?

The capybara, also known as the water pig , is the largest of the 20 guinea pig species. It is also the largest of the more than 2,500 species of rodents. Compared to our common guinea pigs, which weigh around 900 grams , they average between 50 and 70 kilograms . The record holder is a capybara weighing 91 kilograms.

These animals have a massive, stocky body with a sturdy torso and short limbs. Their heads are strikingly broad and massive, with a large, rounded snout. Capybaras reach a length of 100 to 134 centimeters and a shoulder height of 50 to 62 centimeters. They have long, coarse fur that varies in color from reddish-brown to gray on the upperparts and yellowish-brown on the underparts. Some animals have black spots on their face , limbs, or torso.

What are the characteristics of a capybara?

Similar to our guinea pigs, capybaras are generally quite peaceful, calm, and sociable . However, if something displeases them or a rival invades their territory, they can be quite different! Then they squeak, grunt, and growl to put the other in their place.

What do I need to keep capybaras?

For keeping capybaras, the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture stipulates a well-secured outdoor enclosure of at least 40 square meters . This applies to a minimum of two animals . For each additional animal, an extra 20 square meters must be provided. Furthermore, the enclosure must include a large body of water . This should allow easy access on at least one side via a gently sloping bank. There should also be sufficient space for the animals to swim.

Since capybaras lack an undercoat and are therefore not well-equipped for cold weather, they require a heated room (minimum 10 square meters) that includes a small water basin. The water quality should be checked regularly, especially in this basin, but also in any larger water area . Because the fish occasionally defecate in the water, a pond filter and regular partial water changes are recommended .
